When the Forth Bridge was opened in March 1890 it was proclaimed to be one of the finest engineering projects of the day. But much less was said about the true cost of this scheme in human lives. The official number of fatalities was said to be fifty seven but evidence seen by Document suggests that figure was much, much higher.
