Competition Crazy Family

Ruth describes herself half-jokingly as "the most competitive mum in the world".

"It must have started in 1976", says Ruth, "I was awarded Highly Commended in a Children's Book Week competition and received my prize of a book token, presented by TV personality Frank Muir - It was the absolute height of glory in my life to that date!"

...and since then, winning has become a way of life for Ruth, though these days her competitive tendencies are expressed mainly through her two daughters - Nina, 16 months, and Ella, six, whom she enters in numerous competitions. In fact, her girls have won 8 major competitions between them.

Ruth says she probably spends about a hour per week looking for/entering competitions, and her colleagues at work have suggested she give up her career as a community family worker and just produce a few more kids to keep her comfortable in her old age...
