Repeated hand washing is a symptom of OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Listen to the item

David Buckley is 64 and first became aware of his obsessive compulsive disorder when he was in his teens.  He has a fear of being contaminated and so the compulsive ritual of repeated washings helps to calm him. Many other ordinary duties of regular life become ritualised.

Thankfully this disorder is treatable and David has learned how to deal with his obsessions.
