Hilsea Rent Strike

Listen to the item

Margaret and Terry Ferrett who have been married for 45 years, grew up together in Hilsea, a small close-knit community on a council estate in Portsmouth. One of their most vivid childhood memories was of the rent strike which took place after the Second World War. Both their fathers helped to organise the local residents into active opposition against the rise in rent payments - an unheard of action to be taken at that time!

They return to Hilsea to reminisce with 80 yr old Elsie Craigie, a resident who took part in the protest.
