Boys night

Listen to the item

Sixty years ago Bill Gallon, Peter McCormack and Trevor Sterling met each other for the first time somewhere in the lanes and by-ways that branch off  and skirt around Saltwell Street in Gateshead. Even though they didn't go to the same schools something drew them to each other. They met on the way to school, or coming home and soon they were in and out of eachothers' houses and a permanent part of eachothers' lives.

As the years went on this early friendship grew into something much bigger. By the time they were in their late teens others had joined the ranks via youth hostelling trips and cycling weekends away. Above all the group had an unspoken pact that no matter what, and never mind competing family or job commitments, Friday Night was for Them. Always had been. Always would be. Meanwhile the walking and cycling continued apace. It still does.

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Truths reporter Ray Kershaw joined them on one of their away days.
