The Hackney Lion

Listen to the item

In North-East London at The Hackney Empire, somewhere between 1949 and 1951,the old Music Hall was perhaps a little past its hey day but was still pulling them in on a Saturday night. John Miles, today a sage and responsible citizen, was then a self-confessed Jack the Lad who recalls with unalloyed glee the succession of moth-eaten acts that entertained him and his friends.

The way John tells it - The Hackney Empire on a Saturday night would have given the notoriously riotous Elizabethan Bear Garden a run for its money.
