Hazel Whiteley's dad Harold Cartwright had his leg amputated when he was 12 years old. It was 1915 and the hospital was filled with soldiers waiting to be patched up and sent back to France. Harold loved it at the hospital where he was the centre of attention. He would run errands for the soldiers and he wanted to stay.

A week before Christmas Harold was sent home but on Christmas Eve he made his way back to the hospital and had the best Christmas ever.
