In 1982, Gillian Shaw was 28 years old and working as a graphic artist. Then, completely without warning, she contracted Encephalitis which seriously damaged both her long and her short term memory.

In spite of having regular epileptic fits and suffering from severe memory loss, she moved away from her parents, choosing to live alone instead.
