Geoffrey Perkins
TV producer and writer.
Geoffrey Perkins may not have been a household name, but he was behind many of the best known comedy programmes on British TV and radio over the past thirty years. From the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Radio Active on Radio 4 to Spitting Image, Saturday Night Live and the Fast Show on TV, Geoffrey Perkins was the producer who spotted the talent and helped it to success. He worked on Father Ted and Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4, he had recently developed Benidorm for ITV and his ѿý credits included My Family, Jonathan Creek and the Catherine Tate Show. In fact he was Head of Comedy at the ѿý from 1995 to 2001. He had just finished work on a new series with Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse when he collapsed in the street near his London home and was hit by a lorry. His sudden death at the age of fifty-five has shocked friends and colleagues.
Geoffrey Perkins was born at Bushey in Hertfordshire and attended the Harrow County School for Boys. His classmates Clive Anderson and Michael Portillopay tribute withproducer John Lloyd.

Yuri Nosenko
KGB Agent and defector during the Cold War.
A month before Yuri Nosenko died, the director of the CIA presented him with a letter of thanks and an American flag. So what had this former KGB agent done to deserve such recognition? The answer lies at the height of the cold war. In 1964, Nosenko was a middle ranking KGB officer who defected to the United States. At a dark time in America’s history he soon found himself the victim of CIA paranoia. We’ve been speaking to the New York Times reporter Tim Weiner who has written a history of the CIA called “Legacy of Ashes” and to Professor Christopher Andrew of Cambridge University.

Ken Campbell
Experimental writer, theatre director and improviser.
It’s difficult to decide whether the life or the work of the director and performer Ken Campbell was more surreal. Strange happenings in his daily existence found themselves into his celebrated one man shows, while he often led his life as though it was a performance. Ken Campbell was born in Essex and trained at RADA. He began writing and directing plays in the late 60s, developing The Ken Campbell Roadshows which included much improvisation and borrowed techniques from circus and music hall as well as straight theatre. In the 1970s Campbell founded the Science Fiction Theatre of Liverpool whose work included their nine hour stage adaptation of the Illuminatus trilogy of novels.
Latterly Ken Campbell lived in an extraordinary house in Epping Forest where his daughter Daisy showed us round.
We also spoke to the actor Warren Mitchell,whowas a close friend. He directed andstarred in plays by Campbell, who appeared alongside him as Alf Garnett’s annoying neighbour in the TV sitcom “In Sickness and In Health”. Warren remembers their first meeting and those late night phone calls.

Phil Hill
First American racing driverto winthe Formula-One world title.
Phil Hill is still the only American-born driver to have won the world formula one motor racing championship. His victory came in dramatic style at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Hill was driving a Ferrari and competing with his team mate Wolfgang von Trips for the championship title. But on the second lap, von Trips crashed and died in an accident which also killed fourteen spectators.
Phil Hill was born in Miami, Florida but brought up in Santa Monica California. He made his name as a driver in sports cars and, after being spotted by Ferrari, won Le Mans on three occasions. One of the British drivers who competed against Phil Hill was Sir Stirling Moss who remembershis formerrival.
