The first woman president of India

Pratibha Patil is India’s first woman president since the country gained independence from British rule 60 years ago. To her critics, the 72 year old former governor of Rajasthan is a politician who courted controversy, to her supporters she is a role model in a country where millions of women still face widespread discrimination. Jane Little asks writer Maria Misra and South Asia correspondent Navdip Dhariwal whether Mrs Patil will be confined to the usual ceremonial role of an Indian president or she will undertake to effectively improve the lives of Indian women.
