Nelly Avila Moreno - 'Karina' 4ÌýJune 2008
The formidable rebel commander has finally surrendered to the Colombian government

The highest ranking woman in the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was Nelly Avila Moreno - more widely known by her guerilla name, Karina. She was part of the organisation for about 25 years and has been implicated in numerous shootings and kidnappings, yet last monthÌýsheÌýsurrendered to government forces. Jenni talks to Anastasia Moloney, a freelance journalist in Bogota, and Hernando Alvarez, Current Affairs Editor of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ World Service’s Latin American Section. They discuss why women have been so prominent in the armed struggle against the Colombian government, why Karina has decided to withdraw from the fight, and the implications for FARC’s most famous hostage, the kidnapped presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt.
