In the period between the two world wars, European high society found itself bewitched by the glamour, ostentation and, especially, the fabulous jewellery of visiting Indian Royalty.
This special reverence had already resulted in a thriving and internationally famous Indian gem and jewellery trade - particularly in the city of Jaipur.
A new exhibition,“Treasures of the Gem Palace”, has opened at the Gilbert Collection in London celebrating these treasures. It features the work of the Kasliwal family, whose ancestors were jewellers to the Moghul emperors and who continue to make jewellery today.
Anna McNamee visited the exhibition and spoke to its curator Harry Fane. |
