How they are struggling to keep their families together.
There are said to be up to two million refugees flooding across the Iraqi border to escape the sectarian violence. Most are going to Syria and Jordan. In Jordan there are now approaching one million refugees, a quarter of whom are children, and the country is struggling to cope with the ever increasing numbers. Because few of those arriving have official refugee status, most adults can’t work legally, they have no automatic right to healthcare or education, and are often living in appalling conditions. Kati Whitaker visits Amman, where she meets some of the Iraqi women who so often bear the brunt of responsibility for keeping families together.
