Levens Hall in Cumbria is an Elizabethan House with a garden that was first laid out 300 years ago.
The eccentric figures found in its topiary garden - one of the few remaining topiary gardens of its age - have been the inspiration for Julia Barton's Year of the Artist Project.
Her phyto-form exhibition contains a series of sculptural forms built out a variety of materials - including metal wiring, hosepipes and carpet bedding plants.
Caroline Beck went to meet her at the Hall.
The Phyto-form Exhibition runs until 30th September 2001. Open Sun-Thurs 10am-5pm (admission adults: £4.50). Telephone Levens Hall: 01539 560321.
