Once the most prestigious of gifts, gloves were given and received at public and private occasions and considered sufficiently grand to be presented to kings and queens.
Gloves were for swank and that held true right up until the 1950's, when a lady wasn't considered fully dressed unless she wore gloves when she ventured outside the house. A whole code of manners grew up around the rights and wrongs of glove wearing.
These days we're more likely to associate gloves with keeping warm or washing up.
Clare Jenkins has been looking back to an age when gloves were a by-word for elegance.
