Gemma visits Quarry Bank Cotton Mill in Cheshire and looks at the cotton industry with a focus on Apprentice Children who worked hard in the mills. She talks with Malcolm and Celia about the workings of the Mill. In today’s story he hear about Tom Priestly, an apprentice from a Cotton Mill. It provides a window into the tough life that many children faced in 18th Century Britain. So tough in fact that Tom does what the title suggests and runs away. Gemma interviews children on an educational visit to a Mill and hears their thoughts on the industry and what it must have been like to work there as an Apprentice child.
