Novelist and poet Bernardine Evaristo explores the complex and controversial man - Amiri Baraka, who played a key role in developing the Black Arts Movement in the USA. She looks back at how the energy of that cultural phenomenon in 1960s America, inspired her as an emerging Black writer in 1980s Britain. In the first of two programmes, Bernardine returns to Rose Bruford College where she took her first steps towards building a career in the Arts. And she travels to New York to trace the steps that Amiri Baraka took towards establishing the Black Arts Movement.
