Pubs, Caravans, Cats

You and Yours

Available for over a year

You & Yours investigates whether new rules for pubs brought in last summer are working. Around half of Britain's pubs are rented from one of the big breweries or pubcos. Until the new code was introduced, these pubs had to sell the pubcos' beer. Now tenants have the right to go tie-free, buying their beer elsewhere, in return for paying a market rent. But campaign groups for these tied landlords say the Pubs Code, which has an adjudicator to enforce them, isn't working. Our presenter, Winifred Robinson, talks to the Pubs Code Adjudicator about complaints that he's taking too long to settle cases. The caravan holiday home industry in the UK is going through something of a renaissance. The theory is that the generation who stayed on caravan parks as children are coming back to them now they've grown up. The number of annual caravan and camping trips is set to rise to 16.6 million by 2030 and last week Parkdean, the UK's biggest park operator, was sold to a Canadian private equity firm for £1.3 billion pounds. Our reporter visits a site on the East Yorkshire coast near Hull to find out why caravanning is gaining in popularity. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service is warning about cleaning fluids that contain a chemical compound called benzalkonium chloride. It's found in most household disinfectants and patio cleaners and can be a particular hazard to cats. We hear from a cat owner who says her pet became ill after she used a patio cleaner containing the chemical. We also speak to a toxicologist about what precautions pet owners should be taking. Presenter: Winifred Robinson Producer: Tara Holmes.
