Apartheid: From Bitter Almonds to the Rainbow Nation

A History of Hate

Available for over a year

In the last part of his series on the mechanics of hatred, Allan Little explores the roots of South Africa’s apartheid ideology. He learns how white Afrikaner nationalists used historical myths to cast themselves as God’s people, bringing the light of civilisation to a savage continent. These myths framed black people as barbarous and inferior, helping to justify the apartheid system, which legalised the dispossession of the black population. We also hear how the country managed to confront and dismantle its fears and hatreds, ending apartheid and forging a new, inclusive story of the rainbow nation. Presenter: Allan Little Producer:Xavier Zapata Editor: Helen Grady
