"Every day we'd move another day up on our calendar". For many young conscripts, two years seemed a desperately long time to sacrifice for the sake of Queen and country, and they longed for demob, the day when they would be released from their service. Some even created demob calendars, to note the passing of time. Historian Phil Carradice talks to veterans of National Service, as they recall some of their exploits on active service, before the fateful day arrived when they could return to civilian clothing and - all being well - their old jobs.
