Melting Ice and Glaciers

Science Cafe

Available for over a year

Adam Walton asks why glaciers around the world are melting so rapidly and what the ramifications are for our planet. Dr Arwyn Edwards from the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University, describes his research into the microbial habitats present on the surface of glaciers in Svalbard. These microbes are unexpected sources of greenhouse gases, which may be a concern. Plus, Professor Bryn Hubbard and Dr Matthew Peacey from the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, describe their trip to Mount Everest to explore why ice on one of the mountain's glaciers is so close to the melting point. Produced by Stuart Russell.
