Dalia Stasevka and Julian Joseph drop in

Saturday Morning

Expires on Monday 11:00am

Tom Service with guests, stories and the perfect classical soundtrack to start the weekend! Dalia Stasevksa is Tom's guest as she prepares for a concert next week with the ѿý Symphony Orchestra, talking about her homeland, Ukraine, and what music means to the people there living through war. Plus, her radical plans to revolutionise classical orchestral recordings. The ѿý SO concert - broadcast live on ѿý Radio 3 as part of the ѿý's Wild About Nature season - centres around the American composer John Luther Adams' 'Become Ocean', a piece for large orchestra that considers the prospect of the ice caps melting, and the danger that we will once again become part of the ocean. Adams gives Tom his insight into the state of the environment 12 years on from the piece's first performance. Pianist and composer Julian Joseph joins Tom ahead of the 10th annual London Piano Festival at Kings Place, playing in the studio and talking about inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians. And saxophonist and broadcaster, YolanDa Brown, shines a brief light on Winifred Atwell. The Trinidadian pianist and composer, famed for her honky-tonk piano as well as her classical playing, became the first black person to get a number one in the charts.
