Handel's Semele from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Pretty Yende, Alice Coote and Ben Bliss, conducted by Christian Curnyn. A live performance recorded earlier this year of Handel's masterful treatment of a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses concerning the mortal Semele, eventual mother of Bacchus, and her doomed relationship with the god Jupiter. Handel's dramatic setting of a libretto by William Congreve was not originally staged, but is essentially an opera in all but name, widely considered one of his greatest works. Georgia Mann presents, in conversation with opera writer and broadcaster Sarah Lenton. Handel: Semele Semele ... Pretty Yende (soprano) Jupiter ... Ben Bliss (tenor) Juno ... Alice Coote (mezzo soprano) Athamas ... Carlo Vistoli (countertenor) Cadmus and Somnus ... Brindley Sherratt (bass) Ino ... Niamh O'Sullivan (mezzo soprano) Iris ...
