The dramatist and screenwriter Martin Sherman made his name around the world with his 1979 play Bent, about the persecution of gay people in Nazi Germany. It starred Ian McKellen in London and Richard Gere on Broadway. His films include Callas Forever, directed by Franco Zeffirelli with Fanny Ardant as Maria Callas, and Mrs Henderson Presents, starring Judi Dench and telling the story of the Windmill Theatre and its provocative wartime shows. More recently he’s written a memoir, On the Boardwalk, which begins with his early years in New Jersey. His choices includes works by Rachmaninov, Kurt Weill, Chopin and Bizet.
