Wool in Wales

Country Focus

Available for 24 days

Wool has always been part of Wales, shaping communities, keeping us warm and providing livelihoods for generations. Once central to our economy and culture, the fibre declined in importance during the twentieth century. But today, interest in wool is on the rise once more, as people rediscover its natural warmth, versatility and sustainability. In this week’s Country Focus, Ifan Jones Evans travels to Rhoslefain near Tywyn to meet Gillian and John Williams of The Welsh Woolshed. Originally from the Falklands, Gillian has combined her farming background with a passion for wool, creating a business that makes the most of the fleeces from their flock. From handmade products to supplying whole fleeces to crafters, their venture is breathing new life into the value of wool on their farm. Reporter Megan Williams looks at the work of British Wool, which began as the British Wool Marketing Board in 1950. She speaks with Gareth Jones about the organisation’s history, how it operates today, and what more can be done to support farmers and promote the unique qualities of Welsh wool. And Rhodri Davies visits Abergavenny to meet Tracey Stedman at Bellemoon, a business that celebrates the craft and creativity of Welsh woollen mills. Once there were hundreds across Wales, but today only a handful remain. Tracey is passionate about their survival, and about showcasing the distinctive beauty of products made with Welsh wool. Join us for a special edition of Country Focus, celebrating the enduring story of wool in Wales past, present and future.
