‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades. From Monday to Thursday this week, Soweto is joined by the innovative drummer and percussionist Sarathy Korwar, who is widely celebrated for his organic and explorative compositions; where improvisation and collaboration are often at the fore. Sarathy was born in the United States and grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India. During his childhood he began to learn the tabla and was also introduced American jazz music on the radio. He later moved to London to train as a classical tabla player, and has since become a key part of the city’s jazz community. Sarathy will be taking us round his record collection this week for our 4/4 series. To begin his selections, Sarathy chooses a seminal live recording by one of jazz’s eternal greats. Also in the programme, music from AFTK, James Allsopp, and there is also a chance to hear an additional story from legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter Joyce Moreno as she pays tribute to her close friend and collaborator, the late great Hermeto Pascoal.
