To mark 50 years since the death of Shostakovich, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales and their Principal Conductor, Ryan Bancroft, perform two major works that Shostakovich wrote in the 1940s. The First Violin Concerto had to wait seven years before it could be performed due to Shostakovich's censure by the Soviet authorities, but the emotive work has been hugely popular ever since. His 7th Symphony depicted the Nazi siege of Leningrad, and was performed from within the besieged city by local musicians. The mammoth work become an enduring symbol of resilience and resistance against tyranny. Presented by Alexandra Humphreys in Brangwyn Hall on the 3rd of October.
