Charles Wheeler continues his personal interpretations of what the end of the Second World War meant to people in Britain and beyond. As the cheers of the victory parties subsided among the hangovers, the realities of servicemen's return to civilian life began to bite. Picking up the threads of lives interrupted by the horrors of conflict was a new battle to fight. And for women whose lives had moved on, a husband back in the house could mean learning to live with a stranger. Yet for some others, home no longer even existed... Producers: Marya Burgess and Simon Elmes First broadcast on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VE Day in May 2005.
