Two bittersweet national anniversaries

Business Daily

Available for over a year

Celebrations are underway for two national anniversaries. But why is it only now 50 years after independence for Nigeria that a brighter future beckons? The nation's break with Britain unleashed years of ethnic clashes and even the oil boom of the 1970's failed to offer hope as much of the profit was squandered. But now many Nigerians believe that efforts to tackle corruption will lead the country into a new era. Meanwhile in Germany, reunification twenty years ago was, in effect, an absorption of the east into the west. Two decades on and over a trillion euros later, many Germans from the east still feel that they got a raw deal.
