Illiteracy: Tommy and Lee

The Listening Project

Available for over a year

Security guard Tommy is a well-known character in Stoke-on-Trent. Up until recently no one at the pottery factory where he works knew that Tommy couldn’t read or write. One day in a meeting he revealed that, like one in five people in Stoke, he was illiterate. Tommy got help to read and write and has since been awarded an MBE. He talks to his best friend Lee about what it was like to be illiterate, how he turned things around and how proud he was to receive his MBE.
