Jim Hawkins and Tim Jenkins from the museum service on the ground floor of the Flax Mill. The central row of cast iron pillars have a curious aperture designed into them. It was for the drive shaft, driven by a steam engine, that went through the building. Leather belts would take the power from the drive shaft to all the machinery that once occupied every floor of the building.
