In May 1979 Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of Britain and became the longest to serve in the twentieth century. She led the country through the Falklands War, the miners’ strike, negotiations with Europe, and a radical programme of domestic reform. However, in November 1990, after supporting the unpopular poll-tax and low opinion poll ratings, her leadership was challenged. She reflects on feeling ‘sick at heart’ after being deserted by her cabinet and recalls what the Downing Street Years were like. Margaret Thatcher was interviewed by Jenni Murray on 18th October 1993. Baroness Thatcher died, aged 87, on 8 April 2013.
