Nancy Astor became the first female to take a seat in the House of Commons in 1919. Known for her frank-speaking, American wit, she recalls the hardest part of the job was overcoming the cold atmosphere amongst her male colleagues at having a woman in the House. This archive clip was first broadcast in 1956. Nancy Astor died, aged 84, on 2 May 1964.
