In 1987 Betty Boothroyd became the first Labour woman to be appointed as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons. She describes how she presides over the Commons and some of the peculiar rules, including a top hat and yah-boos. Betty Boothroyd later became the first female Speaker of the House of Commons.
