5 Live Breakfast

Available for over a year

New runways at Heathrow and Gatwick have been short-listed as options to expand UK airports, by the Airports Commission, on 17th December by businessman Sir Howard Davies, ahead of a final recommendation expected in 2015. 5 live business reporter Adam Parsons explains the three options, and we hear opinions for and against expansion. 5 live caller Jeff from West London is against expansion at Heathrow, whereas 5 live caller Peter from Suffolk thinks it is necessary to support the economy and growing population. We also hear from representatives from Gatwick and Heathrow; Kyran Hanks, Gatwick Airport Director of Strategy and Regulation, and Colin Matthews, the Heathrow Chief Executive Officer. Anti-expansion campaigners Peter Barclay, from the Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign and John Stewart, chairman of anti-Heathrow expansion lobby group HACAN, say they will fight the plans. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, who proposed a runway in the Thames estuary, thinks the Airports Commission has made a mistake.
