Muslim Marriages not valid

Asian Network Reports

Available for over a year

Hundreds of Muslim marriages carried out each year are not legally valid, according to the country's largest Sharia body. The Islamic Sharia council has told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Asian Network many young couples are only having an Islamic wedding ceremony – the Nikah - and not following it up with a civil registry. This means their marriage is not recognised under British law. It can cause big problems, mainly for women, if the relationship ends because the couple have no marital legal rights. Divya Talwar reports from the Islamic Sharia council in East London.
