Birmingham Council renames health centre in Mandela's honour: Your say

Sunday night with Nikki Tapper

Available for over a year

How should the Midlands honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela? Suggestions from listeners of the Chatback programme include renaming a park, university or school in his honour. Birmingham City Council have decided to rename Handsworth Leisure Centre, the Nelson Mandela Health and Wellbeing Centre. The former South African President had visited the centre during an official visit to Birmingham in 1993. But some oppose the council's plans, saying it plays into the stereotypes of black people and sports. As it's up to the next generation to continue the legacy of Mandela two leading young members of the community had their say on Chatback; Ashley Bertie and Talisha Johnson are both members of the Birmingham youth empowerment forum.
