During World War One, 628 Victoria Crosses were awarded to brave servicemen. Only one man received two. Noel Chavasse was a medic attached to the 10th Battalion of the Kings Liverpool regiment – the Liverpool Scottish. He was the son of the Bishop of Liverpool and one of seven children. They lived in The Palace, Number 19 Abercromby Square which is now overlooked by a memorial to Liverpool Heroes. After being awarded a military cross for his action in Bellewaerde, he was given his first Victoria Cross for returning to no man’s land under enemy fire to rescue wounded at Guillemont. His second was received posthumously after defying orders at the 3rd battle of Ypres to withdraw. He continued to save as many lives as he could with a captured German medic. He died of the injuries sustained in the battle. Noel himself never fired a weapon.
