Castaway – El Salvador man says he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific Ocean

World Update

Available for over a year

A fisherman says he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific Ocean before washing ashore on the Marshall Islands. Jose Salvador Albarengo, originally from El Salvador, told officials he set sail on a fishing trip from Mexico in late December 2012 – some 10,000km away from where he eventually landed in the north Pacific territory. He said he had survived by catching birds and fishes, and that his only shipmate had died a month into their ordeal. One of the officials Mr Albarengo met on his arrival was the assistant secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Doreen Debrum.
