Nurseries life skills training over reading and writing

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Ofsted's chief inspector has called for more information about what goes on in nurseries saying many are not ensuring children are ready to learn when they move to primary school. Sir Michael Wilshaw said England's poorest children can be badly served, with only a third reaching a good level of development in pre-schools and a greater emphais on structred learning is needed. Allison Lee, owner of Little Acorns near Huddersfield says many nurseries are already preparing children properly. "I've worked with a lot of schools, they say if we teach a child to go to the toilet independently, put their coats on, get themselves dressed and emotionally get children ready for school, it is just as if not more important than if they can read and write," she said. Parents at the nursery are kept fully up to date with their children's progress and Allison Lee says structured learning has already been in place for years.
