Former soldier told he'd be "better off coming out of prison"

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

By 2020, the British Army will have shrunk to its lowest number of full time soldiers since 1850. There'll be over 30,000 fewer full-time service personnel in the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and British Army by 2020 than there were in 2010. We've been talking to ex-military, learning just how hard it can be to lead a normal life after the forces. Thomas Gow, who was the highest decorated soldier in his regiment, left the forces after 13 years and told Rachel Burden how he struggled to find career advice and financial support and even spent some time living in a bedsit for the homeless. This clip is from 5 live Breakfast 28 April 2014.
