Jazz trumpeter and composer Guy Barker shares one of his great passions, the music of Arthur Honegger, with Donald Macleod. The Swiss composer, Arthur Honegger (10 March 1892 – 27 November 1955) was born in France and lived a large part of his life in Paris. He was a member of Les Six. His most frequently performed work is probably the orchestral work Pacific 231, which is interpreted as imitating the sound of a steam locomotive. At the end of the Second World War, Honegger resumed a hectic schedule of concerts. The sudden onset of ill health slowed his pace of life considerably and this - combined with the experience of living through the war - gave him a rather pessimistic outlook.
