Maya Angelou

The People

Available for over a year

The American writer Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86. "Renaissance woman" seems to be a popular description of a forceful personality, who rose from humble beginnings in the racially segregated deep south to become an international icon and national treasure, chosen to read poetry at the inauguration of the last two US democratic presidents. In this extract ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s Karen Gabay shares her recollections of meeting Maya Angelou on a couple of occasions, including being invited to her 75th birthday party.
