A new film telling the true story of the illegitimate mixed race daughter of an 18th century Royal Navy officer and a female Caribbean slave, opens at cinemas around the country this week. Slavery drama, Belle, is inspired by the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was raised by her great uncle, Lord Mansfield - an eminent Scottish lawyer who became Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales - as slavery was coming to an end in England. It stars British actress Gugu Mbatha Raw, in her first leading role, and was directed by the black British film-maker, Amma Asante.
