Finding Love in Orkney: William and Elizabeth

The Listening Project

Available for over a year

When William and Elizabeth gave up their lives to move to Orkney, it was as business partners in a crofting business. William was coming to the end of a career as a semi-professional table tennis player, and Elizabeth had spent a few years learning to live sustainably in rural Kent. They both wanted to find a simpler way to exist and were drawn towards Orkney, but were it not for William's sister, they might never have met. She thought it strange that William had exactly the same plans as her neighbour Elizabeth. William couldn't believe it either, and paid Elizabeth a visit that very afternoon. Over 30-years and two children later, the couple still live and work together in their croft on the tiny island of Sanday, off Orkney. A postscript to this story is that while William's table tennis career came to an end, Sanday provided the perfect place to run. Quiet roads, beautiful coastal views and plenty of fresh air gave him the motivation to kick off a career as an ultra runner. He's since set multiple ultra distance running records (from 12 Hours to 1000 miles) at national and international level.
