Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a ring that helps blind and partially sighted people understand printed text. The FingerReader is fitted with a small camera which scans printed text including books, newspapers and restaurant menus. A synthesized voice then reads the worlds aloud and vibrates if the reader has strayed from the text. Lead researcher on the project, Roy Shilkrot, told Drive the invention could help anyone facing a “barrier” to accessing language. First broadcast on Drive on 9 July 2014.
