Millions of cars all over the world have been recalled by their manufacturers in the past few years, with General Motors and Toyota leading the way. What does that tell us about the state of the automotive industry? Professor David Bailey of Aston University says it does not mean there is a problem with manufacturing processes, but rather that cars are becoming more complex to build as technology advances. Also, Jane O'Brien in Washington hears the views of US consumers, many of whom appear to have shrugged off the recalls. Instead, they have welcomed a more cautious approach to safety by car manufacturers.
