Journalist on Pistorius conviction: 'I sense a massive backlash'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

South African based journalist, Neil Manthorp, said the "overwhelming majority" of the country feel that Oscar Pistorius' culpable homicide conviction "defies logic and common sense". This comes after Pistorius was found guilty of the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, but was cleared of murder charges by Judge Masipa. Mr Manthorp said "people are screaming out" after the conviction was given, as there is a perception that "not enough justice" is applied for violence against women in South Africa. He also said there is a perception that "white celebrities get preferential treatment" in the courts in South Africa. This clip was originally broadcast on the Sam Walker programme on Friday September 12 2014.
