Measuring older people's sense of smell could help predict how long they are likely to live, according to new research. Scientists at the University of Chicago surveyed 3,000 adults aged between 57 and 85. They found 39% with the poorest sense of smell died within five years, compared to just 10% who identified smells correctly. Cardiff University smell expert, Professor Tim Jacob, said the "astonishing" discovery showed how "very important" smell was to overall health.
