After being thwarted at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, German troops were forced to retreat, leading both sides to head north towards the English Channel. This attempt by both parties to outflank each other became known as ‘The Race to the Sea’. It would have the effect of slowing down the pace of the war, as troops became enmeshed along a frontline hundreds of miles long.
